Participatory Budgeting In Rockaway
Participatory Budgeting is an annual process where the community decides how to spend their tax dollars. Councilman Richards is providing Rockaway with $1 million to spend on parks, streets, schools, sidewalks, trees, and any public space to improve the quality of life. If you have an idea of how to spend this money, we want to hear from you!
To improve Rockaway we're going to need your ideas, time, and desire to make it happen.

How does the PB process work?
The process begins with idea collection. We will be scouring the neighborhood to inform people about PB and gather ideas. Who knows what the community needs better than the community members? As we are doing this, we will also be recruiting volunteers. Those volunteers will move forward with us and be responsible with developing the most impactful ideas into projects. Those projects will then be presented to the community for a vote. The projects that receive the most votes will be funded by Councilman Richards.
How long does the process take?
There are three phases in the process and they span over three seasons.
How can I get more involved?
There are many ways you can help out with this process:

What can get funded through PB?
While we are interested in hearing all of you ideas, only capital projects will be able to get funded. PB pays for brick and mortar projects as well as equipment. That means projects that are building, renovating, improving, or adding to a physical structure.
Examples of ideas that won in the past:
- Far Rockaway Educational Campus Library Upgrade
- FREC New Weight Room
- Classroom Upgrades in P.S. 183Q
