OUR STORY
SuperMarvelous Society is a not-for-profit charitable organization founded in 2014; it is the brainchild of Manuel and Lauren Fennell-Silva. After growing up in pest infested buildings where food was scarce, new clothes were rare, and parents were never home, because they were out working multiple jobs to make enough just to survive, the only proper recourse was to start an organization meant to combat it; That is the role that SMS will play. SMS was created to help fill the void that is created by the many organizations that claim to “fight poverty,” but only end up assisting it by putting people in minimum wage jobs, but not assisting them in gaining the tools and knowledge needed to obtain middle class jobs. Middle class should be the lowest economic tier in such a wealthy city and country.
Our mission is to reduce poverty and its consequences in NYC by the promotion of positive social mobility. This can and will be accomplished using multiple programs meant to both change mindsets and provide one with relevant work experience, creative campaigns, events, and tasks. After speaking to friends, Manuel and Lauren discovered that many of them had the same sentiments, so the first board of directors came to be. Most of the members of our organization grew up in low income neighborhoods. We know first hand the consequences of poverty. We are dedicated to creating real change.
Making progress in the fight against poverty calls for a constant and ever changing strategy in a diverse landscape. We believe that new approaches to assist in tackling poverty should be developed everyday. Our approach is not the only approach, but if you believe that people can and should be able to move up from one socio-economic class to another then you are a part our team already. We are young. We are strong. We are determined. We are defiant. We are explorers. We are leaders. We are passionate. We are changing the world!
Economic systems are a way of allocating resources. Resources include food, land, water, and various other essential items. In the United States some individuals receive more access to essential resources than others and some families have no access at all to essential resources. This should not be the case in a developed state. This should definitely not be the case in New York City. There should be a system where everyone has the opportunity to make all that they want, while at the same time ensuring that everyone who works lives comfortably.
We have the technology, we have an advance epistemology of economics, we have a clear understanding of history, and we have the internet; all which provide us with the capability to end poverty. It has become more of a tradition than a necessity. Does such an advance society require a class of poor people in order forafewtoberich? We doubt it. Alone we can do some things, but together we can do GREAT things!
